Shaft Hoist and Mobile Point Hoist for Theater Use – SKS Control Oy
This theater point hoist was developed in close collaboration with the client. Bestdan was responsible for both the engineering and design aspects of the project. The design process began from the client’s specifications and continued with principle-level ideation and early-stage sketches. These concepts were evaluated together with the client, based on their experience and risk assessments.
In parallel, we explored various available motor, gearbox, and brake options with the client. These components both enabled and limited certain design directions. The final structure chosen was a boom-type model that distributed floor loads more evenly. A motor-gearbox unit was found within the client group’s product range that had integrated bearing support sufficient to handle the cable tension directly, which significantly simplified the overall structure.
Both the conceptual and detailed design phases were carried out in close cooperation with the client. Ideas came from both sides and were reviewed together by the most relevant team for each stage. Throughout the process, structural and dynamic calculations were maintained, showing forces on the structure, bearing loads, acceleration and braking distances, and stress values in critical parts.
Some components were calculated manually using Excel, while more complex geometries were evaluated by isolating forces and running FEM simulations for accurate stress analysis. The result of the project was a fully realized, Europe’s best mobile point hoist for theater use.
